MIDLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL TO RESUME ELECTIVE PROCEDURES NEXT WEEK AS IV FLUID SUPPLY STABILIZES
Posted On: 11/8/2024
Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) is pleased to announce that with a recent increase in IV fluid shipments, the hospital will resume scheduled elective procedures effective Monday, November 11, 2024. In addition, MMH is planning to start rescheduling elective surgeries on Monday, November 18th. This update follows the temporary postponement of some elective procedures last week due to an IV fluid shortage stemming from Hurricane Helene's impact on a key manufacturing facility.
The damage to Baxter’s North Cove, North Carolina plant, a critical supplier of IV fluids nationwide, created a supply challenge across the country. Since the onset of this shortage, Midland Memorial Hospital has worked diligently to conserve existing supplies and secure additional shipments through various suppliers. These efforts, combined with the collaboration of our medical teams, have allowed us to reach a stable supply level to resume elective procedures, while maintaining our conservation measures.
Dr. Rohith Saravanan, Chief Medical Officer of MMH, stated, “We are grateful for the understanding and patience of our community, staff and physicians. Our dedicated teams have made substantial progress in reducing IV fluid utilization through strategic conservation measures, enabling us to move forward cautiously with scheduled elective procedures. We will continue our daily monitoring and conservation efforts to ensure sustainability and adjust accordingly.”
MMH understands the importance of timely elective procedures and has prioritized the safe and efficient resumption of services. Patients whose procedures were postponed last week will be prioritized for rescheduling.
We thank the community for their patience and continued support as we work to navigate this challenging time and prioritize patient care.
