“Lung cancer,” those words can be a devastating diagnosis. While it is true that lung cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women in the U.S.; our message, at the Midland Health Lung Center, is that lung cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Part of the reason for the high number of lung cancer deaths is that often lung cancer is not diagnosed until the late stages, when symptoms are present. When detected early and treated 5-year survival rates can increase from 6%, wit...

      • The Threads of Compassion: How a Quiet Gesture Wove Healing and Hope

Cecilia Paquian slipped quietly through the hospital corridors just as she always did, her steps soft and measured, her presence as humble as a whisper. The hum of activity at Midland Memorial Hospital often drowned out the ordinary, but Cecilia had never needed fanfare. She carried out her housekeeping duties with precision and care, blending into the background, unnoticed by most, but shared her kind eyes and her warm, subtle smile. Celia understood her role deeply—not just as a housekeeper, but as som...

      • Continuing to Create More Informed Breast Cancer Awareness

All month long we have been talking about making breast cancer awareness personal, by knowing about what screenings are appropriate and about being aware of your breast density. So, what are some of the other reasons that only about 40% of women in the Permian Basin who should get a mammogram, do so? We gathered information through a survey and found these to be some of the other reason women are not getting their mammogram. One of the reasons women told us is that they think, I am too young. The America...

      • Continuing to Create More Informed Breast Cancer Awareness

As stated in last week’s article, the definition for awareness is concern about and  well-informed  interest in a particular situation or development. It was also discussed that our mission here at The Breast Center is to create well-informed patients along with a well-informed community.   Last week we discussed one myth that needed to be overcome, “I don’t have to worry, I don’t have any family history of breast cancer”. We addressed that 3 out of 4 women who are diagnosed with breast c...

      • Plant the Seeds for Heart Health

My mother is an incredible gardener. Her backyard is full of rows and clusters of blooms that explode in color every year. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are frequent visitors. When I was younger, I thought she could just look at a piece of ground and make something amazing grow. Through the years, I learned that her beautiful garden is the result of intentional habits that create a space for those delightful, healthy explosions of color and fragrance. February is American Heart Month. Spring is ri...
