Coping with Loss
Overview
If you've recently experienced a major change in
your life, you may struggle emotionally. Things like
the death of a loved one, a move to a new town or a
retirement can all trigger feelings of loss. Loss can
be painful and overwhelming. But there are ways to
cope with these feelings.
Be honest
First, be honest with people. Don't pretend you're
OK when you're not. If you're struggling, let people
know so they can help you. Expressing your
feelings is an important part of dealing with loss.
Take time to grieve
It's also important to give yourself time to grieve. So
slow down. Take time to reflect on your loss and
adjust to your new life. Don't dwell on the past. Live
in the present and focus on your future. And if you
can, try to postpone major life decisions as you
work through your feelings. Be patient, because the
healing process can take months or even years.
Focus on health
Make sure you don't neglect your health. Eat a
nutritious diet, get plenty of sleep and try to exercise
every day. Some people who experience loss turn
to alcohol or drugs. Be aware that this is unhealthy
and dangerous.
Reach out
And finally, reach out when you need help. Talk to
friends and family. Find a support group for people
like you. If you are depressed or overwhelmed, tell
your doctor so you can get the care you need. With
time, you'll be able to work through your grief and
enjoy life again.
